FSSAI Registration (Food License)

In india, any individual or an entity is required to take FSSAI Registration/License if he is proposing to begin a food business. All the traders, manufacturers, restaurants, transporters, marketers, distributors, etc. who are in the business of any food Product need to take Food License.

Food Safety and Standards Authority of india (FSSAI) lays down the eligibility criteria for Food Business operators (FBOs) under different kind of business. Different eligibility criteria has been laid down for different kinds of businesses like :

Business Eligibility Criteria 
For Manufacturers and Food Processors Production Capacity
For Retailers/Suppliers/Distributors Annual Turnover
For Hotels Star-rating

Here is the list of all business activities along-with Eligibility criteria and fee details : FSSAI License Eligibility criteria

Basically, there are 3 types of Food license :

1. Registration : Small businesses with annual turnover upto Rs. 12 Lakhs are required to take “Registration” only [License is not required]. All small businesses (Manufacturers/Food-Processors/Traders/Etc. are eligible for only REGISTRATION if their annual turnover doesn’t exceed Rs. 12 Lakhs.

2. State License : You can apply for state license, If your annual turnover is more than Rs. 12 Lakhs and doesn’t exceeds the limits as mentioned in eligibility criteria for different businesses (as prescribed for state  license).

Eg :

Businesses State License Limit
Dairy units 10,001 Ltr to 50,000 Ltr milk per day
Wholesale Turnover upto Rs. 30 crores
Distributor/Supplier/Retailer/Marketer Turnover upto Rs. 20 crores
Hotel 3 Star and 4 Star

Note : In addition to the above criteria, a business has to take Central License for his Head office if it has operations/branches in more than 1 state.

3. Central License : You can apply for Central license, If your annual turnover is more than limits prescribed in  eligibility criteria for different businesses (as prescribed for Central License).

Eg :

Businesses State License Limit
Dairy units More than 50,000 Ltr milk per day
Wholesale Turnover more than Rs. 30 crores
Distributor/Supplier/Retailer/Marketer Turnover more than Rs. 20 crores
Hotel 5 Star & above

Note : In addition to the above criteria, a business has to take Central License for his Head office if it has operations/branches in more than 1 state.

Importers to take one single Central License at their IEC Address.
One premise with multiple kind of businesses is eligible for One License/Registration only.
